Biography: Tom Devriendt obtained his Master’s degrees in Philosophy (1998-2002) and Social and Cultural Anthropology (2002-2004) at the Catholic University of Leuven. In 2005 he finished the Postgraduate programme in International Relations and Conflict Management, also at the Catholic University of Leuven. He was enrolled as a visiting student at the National University of San Augustin, department of anthropology, Arequipa, Peru (February - June 1998) and as a participant in the Erasmus Programme at the University of Sevilla, department of social anthropology, Spain (October 2003 - February 2004). Since October 2005 he works on his PhD, funded by the BOF (2005) and the Fund for Scientific Research Flanders (2006-2010), with a focus on post-apartheid identity creation in South Africa. From 2006 until 2009 he conducted fieldwork in South Africa - in the cities of Cape Town, Stellenbosch and Potchefstroom. Topics of interest: Postcolonial literature, apartheid, ethnicity, cultural hybridity, migration, music, conflict studies, ritual studies, philosophical anthropology.
