Mission statement

The Research by the IARA focuses on how Africans shape their present-day lifeworld, however ‘local’ or ideosyncratic. Except to its mission statement, this page contains links to ongoing research (including the larger research projects the Institute is conducting now), or to the Ph.D. dissertations already completed. The themes presented in our mission statement you also find reflected in the profile of our staff. You can also check our grants and awards page. Have a look...

Ongoing Research

Interested in knowing what our staff and collaborators are studying? Our overview of current research lists doctoral and other projects currently on their way.

Doctoral Seminars

As part of the doctoral program in Social sciences/ Social and cultural anthropology, The IARA also organizes regular doctoral seminars, where doctoral students are given the opportunity to confront their collegues with the questions they are struggling with, or where international scholars present part of their research. Under this heading also belong the seminar series on the anthropology of secondary cities.

Next to these doctoral seminars, the IARA also organizes more intensive doctoral workshops.

Workshops, Conferences, Symposia

Here you find a list of the scientific meetings organized by members of the IARA, including the doctoral workshops, conferences and symposia our staff (co-)organized in the past.
