The European Union Institute for Security Studies (EUISS) was
established by the Council Joint Action of 20 July 2001 and inaugurated
on 1 January 2002. The EUISS is an independent agency operating under
the EU’s second pillar, the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP).
It is also an independent think tank.This agency was created by a Council Joint action. Its tasks include: developing defence capabilities, promoting Defence Research and Technology (R&T), promoting armaments co-operation, creating a competitive European Defence Equipment Market and strengthening the European Defence, Technological and Industrial Base.
