Mission Statement

The Centre for User Experience Research (Centrum voor User Experience Onderzoek - CUO) wants to conduct applied research as well as fundamental research in the domain of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), starting from the user point of view rather than from a technological point of view. It follows a user-centred design philosophy in order to design and evaluate prototypes of ICT products (see Methods for more information on this approach).

Instead of merely researching the usability of ICT products, the CUO wants to address the interaction of the user with a system on all levels. It therefore addresses the accessibility, functionality, usability, likeability, sociability and/or playability of different systems. The exact focus of research is determined by the kind of application, the goal of the users and the context of use.

The CUO wants to enhance the field of Human-Computer Interaction by improving user-centred design methodologies and creating new or improved methods to design or evaluate ICT products. The CUO especially aims to develop new methods to design and evaluate the concepts of sociability, likeability and playability.

Research themes the CUO is interested in include (but are not limited to):

  • Children and HCI
  • Communities and sociability
  • HCI for the elderly
  • eHealth
  • Usability and playability of games
  • Interactive television
  • Mobile interaction
  • Tangible interfaces
  • Ubiquitous computing
