Structural and Cultural Determinants of Voting in Flanders 2007: Why One Votes (or not) for the Vlaams Belang

Prof. dr. Marc Swyngedouw (ISPO-K.U.Leuven)

Using the Belgian National Election study Flanders 2007 we will discuss the profile of the Vlaams Belang voter in this election and compare where possible with the 2003 profile. To do this we will first study the shift between Vlaams Belang and the other parties in Flanders from 2003 to 2007. We then move to the structural (socio-demographic) determinants of a vote for the Vlaams Belang and continue with the attitudinal or so-called cultural determinants of this vote. We conclude with the study of the subjective motives of the voters to vote for this extreme right party.

In this seminar we make use of the results of studies carried out together with drs. Nathalie Rink, dr. Dirk Heerwegh and prof. em. Jaak Billiet.
