Courses: Seminar - Workshop IV: Preparing datasets for empirical analysis

Teaching Staff

Prof. Jean-Claude Ray (University of Nancy 2, France)
Dr. Anne Reinstadler (CEPS/INSTEAD, Luxembourg)
Dr. Ioana Salagean (CEPS/INSTEAD, Luxembourg)

Objectives

Students will learn how to prepare datasets (especially longitudinal and cross-countries datasets) for empirical analysis.

Contents

This workshop offers to the students the opportunity to discover how to cope with the classical difficulties encountered at the initial stage of the empirical part of virtually every applied research work (including the Impalla dissertation): datasets should be appropriately built, carefully checked and cleaned before any statistical analysis. Relevant methods will be demonstrated and implemented through exercises in the computer room, under the supervision and with the help of the teachers. The main focus will be on building longitudinal and cross-countries datasets, on the creation of duration and time-varying variables along with censoring indicators, and on the use of simple SAS macro-programmes allowing saving a lot of time when repetitive tasks have to be done on several waves and countries.
