Courses: Levelling up Statistics
Teaching staff
Dr. Wilco Emons (Tilburg University, The Netherlands)
Prof. Jacques Hagenaars (Tilburg University, The Netherlands)
Objectives
It is assumed that participants have followed an undergraduate course in descriptive and inferential statistics, in data analysis techniques, and in research methodology. The objective of the course is in part to refresh the statistical and methodological knowledge and, if necessary, to adjust certain minor shortcomings.
Contents
Statistics (Dr. Emons): Basics of
- descriptive statistics
- probability
- inferential statistics
- regression
Principles of research and basic analysis techniques (Prof. Hagenaars):
In this levelling up part, first, an overview is presented of all steps in the research process: formulating the research problem, operationalization, collecting and analyzing the data, interpreting the outcomes. Next basic analysis techniques are discussed: multi-way tables analysis for categorical data and simple regression analysis for continuous data. Finally, basic principles of measurement and scaling are explained. Throughout it is assumed that students know at least the elementary principles underlying techniques.
