Esch-sur-Alzette is a commune with city status, in south-western Luxembourg, on the border with France. It is the country's second city, after Luxembourg. The town is usually referred to just as Esch. Esch lies in the valley of the Alzette, which flows through the town.

CEPS/INSTEAD is a very young and dynamic centre of research into populations, poverty and socio-economic politics. Activities
Esch-sur-Alzette is home to the National Museum of the Resistance. Other tourist attractions include Lakelz miniature railway, the large park, and the Berwart Tower, built in 1621. There are two cinemas, called the 'Ariston' and the 'Kinosch'. There is also the Kulturfabrik, a cultural centre in a reconverted abattoir which hosts performances of various kinds. The city is the centre of the country's steel manufacture.

Luxembourg lies on the cultural divide between Romance Europe and Germanic Europe, borrowing customs from each of the distinct traditions. It is a trilingual country; French, German, and Luxembourgish are the official languages. Although a secular state, Luxembourg is predominantly Roman Catholic.
G.D. of Luxembourg has a large immigrant population and border workers, from various nationalities. Although, its (international) university student population is very limited, it won't be difficult to meet people from all over the world.
Luxembourg has a marine west coast climate, marked by high precipitation, particularly in late summer.
