How to enter and stay in Luxembourg as a student
Travelling relevant documents such as visa (if requested) are your own responsibility and all formalities have to be completed before arriving in Luxembourg. In order to fasten your immigration formalities if you are admitted, it is wise to already have valid identity documents (identity card, passport), as well as birth certificate and criminal record issued in advance.Formalities before arrival in Luxembourg
EU citizens/students
EU citizens register their arrival at the city hall/municipality of their place of residence.
Third-countries citizens/students
Before entering the country, the student has to apply for an authorization of stay at the Ministry in charge of immigration matters. The student should indicate his/her identity (name, surname and details) and attach the following documents:

(*) All the students are covered by the health insurance system of Luxembourg for the duration of the programme. The Impalla secretariat takes care of all necessary formalities. Health insurance is free until the age of 30; students aged 30 or more will be charged.
In countries in which Luxembourg does not have a diplomatic or consular mission, the application should be made to the Belgian/Dutch diplomatic or consular mission that represents Luxembourg in consular matters.

Please note that the Impalla secretariat provides the Immigration service in Luxembourg with the list of all the admitted students as well as copies of their admission and grant documents. However, the students have to submit their application for entering and staying, from their place of residence.
In case a Non-EU citizen is studying within the Schengen space at the time of his/her admission in our programme, he/she has to apply - from his/her present place of residence - for an extension of his/her authorization of stay while it is still valid and before joining the programme in Luxembourg.

Formalities upon arrival in Luxembourg
All students have to register within 3 days at the “Administration communale - bureau de la population”, municipality/city hall of their place of residence. This formality is compulsory and linked to other administrative and practical aspects of staying in Luxembourg (residence permit/card, health insurance, transport card). Non-EU citizens have to apply for a residence permit. The Impalla secretariat takes care of the whole procedure (more details are given on arrival) K.U.Leuven student registration procedure requires the original diplomas to be presented. Therefore, all students need to bring their original diplomas on the IMPALLA starting day. |
