Services Institute of Social and Political Opinion Research (ISPO)

Services

The substantive and methodological knowledge of ISPO is also available for external stakeholders. One of such topics are the exit-polls to which ISPO contributed. This project was initiated in the local elections of 1994, and were successfully repeated in the elections of 2000. For the parliamentary elections of 1995 and 1999, the same recipe was used. In collaboration with the Flemish television (VRT) and with the Newspaper 'Financieel-Economische Tijd', people have been questioned just after voting, in order to gain information and knowledge on conscious motives in voting processes. ISPO, in this perspective, also works on the optimalisation of the methods used, given the existing judicial frame.

Other projects in the past were assignments of the Flemish autorities. Next to full research projects ranging from sampling to reporting, ISPO also provides consultancy on partial topics in scientific social research. ISPO can help in designing and correcting questionnaires, in sampling, or in data analysis.

Collaborations

The ISPO is part of the Unit Data collection and analysis and in this frame collaboration with the Centre for Survey Methodology (CSM) is guaranteed. ISPO participates in comparative and longitudinal research of FWO-WOG. ISPO collaborates closely with IPSoM (KUBrussel), PIOP (UCL) and Ercomer (University of Utrecht).

The ISPO works together with the International Committee for the Study of Representatives and Electors ( ICORE), is a member of the Comparative Study of Electoral Systems network (CSES), in which 40 countries are involved and coördinated by the university of Michigan. The ISPO also participates in the European Election Study 2004. The ISPO is a member of the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR), and of the Training and Mobility of Researchers (TMR), an initiative of the European Science Foundation on 'Representation in Europe'. The ISPO finally is a robust player in the preparation of the European Social Survey.
